From Seed to Sprout: How to Grow Houseplants from Seed

By far the most common question hitting our inbox is, "Okay, I’ve got my new houseplant seeds... now what?!"

While diving into the world of indoor gardening can feel a bit intimidating at first, promise it’s way easier than it looks. You don't need a massive green thumb to successfully grow houseplants from seed! To get the party started, your future indoor plants really only need three core things to wake up and sprout.

Here is the ultimate golden trio for germination, listed in order of importance:

  1. Moisture: The absolute number-one requirement. Keeping things very moist (not soggy!) tells your houseplant seeds it's time to wake up. This means two things: make sure to really soak the soil through prior to planting the seeds, and always use a humidity dome to seal the humidity in.

  2. Warmth: Cozy temperatures mimic spring and let your seeds know it's safe to sprout. It's critical to make sure your seeds are consistently between 70F-90F(the ideal range is 75F-85F). The best way to accomplish this is to use a heat mat, or to keep in a warmer spot indoors like on top of the fridge or in the bathroom(avoid heat vents and open windows).

  3. Light: Crucial for long-term growth, though not always strictly required right at the very beginning. It's important to make sure you avoid direct sunlight, and instead give your seeds bright, indirect or filtered sunlight or better yet, LED grow lights!

What Does The Ideal Setup Look Like?

  1. Seed Prep: Check if your seeds need any seed prep, whether it's scarification, stratification, or pre-soaking.
  2. Pick Your Planter: It's best to use a greenhouse or planter with humidity dome, but you can use a 3"-4" nursery planter(make sure it's a material that seals in moisture like plastic, ceramic, or rice hull) and cover it with a ziploc baggie or plastic wrap to act as a humidity dome. Just make sure your planter has great drainage, and a humidity dome of some sort.
  3. Add the Soil: Pick a light, well-draining potting medium with minimal-no fertilizer. We recommend using coconut fiber soil pods- they'll keep your seeds at the optimal moisture level! Fully soak through your planting medium and add it to your planter
  4. Sow the Seeds: Depending on the seed, you'll want to either sprinkle them on the surface of the soil or plant them at the appropriate depth.
  5. Seal It Up! Cover your planter with a humidity dome, then place in a warm spot 70F-90F(ideally a heat mat), and away from direct sunlight
  6. The Wait: Leave the dome on and don't open it more than once a week to add some water. Ideally, bottom water the setup so you don't need to open the dome at all! As soon as you see sprouts, open the air vents(or poke some holes into your ziploc baggie or plastic wrap) for a couple of days, then start to take the dome off gradually. The Secret Shortcut

Fun fact: you can actually skip a step initially! Seeds don’t necessarily need light just to crack open. In fact, if your cozy germination spot has a little extra moisture, you might find even your most exotic or rare plant seeds sprouting happily in the pitch dark. Just keep in mind—they won't get very far without light once they start to grow, so make sure they get plenty of bright, indirect light the moment those little green heads pop up!

Give Them Some Elbow Room

When you're ready to plant, make sure your seeds aren't competing too much for space. Give them about 2 to 3 inches of space around them in their container.

  • Planning to transplant later? Let them grow comfortably in their starter setup for a few weeks until the seedlings are a bit larger and hardier before moving them.

  • Want a low-maintenance approach? If you prefer to leave them in their container for a while without moving them, giving each seed its own small nursery pot right from the start is an absolute game-changer (especially for smaller varieties like Polka Dot plants)!

Patience vs. Fast Sprouts

Every plant moves at its own pace! To give you an idea of what to expect, we usually pitch in an extra seed or two with your order just to compensate for any stubborn ones in the mix.

Storing Your Seeds

Not ready to plant just yet? No worries! If you want to keep your seeds fresh for a little while before planting, you absolutely can. Just keep them tucked away in a cool, dark place—a simple box in your fridge works beautifully.
