August is officially "Deep Clean Season" for indoor plant parents! Before autumn arrives and your houseplants enter their natural slow-growth or dormant phase, late summer is your final golden window to tackle all those overdue plant chores.
Giving your collection a full care audit now ensures your plants have healthy roots and are fully prepared to sail through winter. Grab your pruners, soil bags, and wiping cloths—here is your ultimate late-summer indoor plant care checklist!

1. The Repotting Audit: Give Those Roots Room to Breathe 🪵
During the spring and summer active growing seasons, fast-growing plants can quickly outgrow their containers.
-
Signs a plant needs repotting: Roots growing out of drainage holes, water sitting on top of the soil without soaking in, or a plant that's top-heavy and tipping over.
-
How to Repot Plants Successfully: Move rootbound plants up 1 to 2 inches in pot diameter using fresh, well-draining potting soil mixed with perlite or pumice. Doing this in August gives roots enough warm weeks to establish before growth slows down in winter!
2. Flush Out Built-Up Fertilizer Salts 💧
If you’ve been feeding your plants all spring and summer, mineral and fertilizer salts can build up in the soil, leaving white, crusty deposits on the pot rim or soil surface.
-
The Fix: Take your plant to the sink or shower and let room-temperature water run gently through the soil for 2–3 minutes, letting it drain completely out of the drainage holes. This flushes away excess salts and prevents root burn!
3. Prune, Shape & Propagate ✂️

Late summer is the perfect time to tidy up leggy stems or yellowing leaves. Get your foliage shears ready and let's get to work!
-
Trim off damaged or sun-scorched foliage so the plant stops wasting precious energy on dying leaves.
-
Snip long, leggy stems to encourage bushier, more compact growth. Don't throw those cuttings away—pop them in water or a moist propagation medium to grow entirely new plant babies!
4. Give Every Leaf a Deep Clean 🍃
Accumulated dust blocks sunlight and slows down photosynthesis. Give your indoor jungle a complete foliage wipe-down with a damp microfiber cloth (supporting the back of each leaf as you wipe!), either with water or a leaf wellness spray to also help prevent pests. You can also give your plants a plant shower! Squeaky-clean leaves absorb light much more efficiently as natural daylight hours shrink.
End the Summer Strong!
Taking an hour or two this August to repot, flush, and polish your collection will pay off massively when your houseplants stay vibrant, green, and pest-free all through the darker months.
