Vertical Gardening 101: How to Grow More Plants in Less Space!

Vertical Gardening 101: How to Grow More Plants in Less Space!

Do you dream of lush greenery but don't have a big yard to grow it? If that's the case, then vertical gardening is for you! Vertical gardening is exactly what it sounds like - growing plants in a vertical direction rather than spreading them out horizontally. And it's not just a great way to maximize space, but it's also a great way to maximize light! There are so many different vertical garden setups out there, you can really get creative with it and make it work for your space. Let's talk about some of the more popular setups out there and their pros and cons.

1. vertical wall planters

Vertical wall planters are super versatile and easy to use! You can hang them on a wall or fence, and they come in all shapes and sizes, from planters that can sit on a fence, to planters that may be a little smaller but are more versatile, with holes on the side that you can tie to just about anything.

Pictured are the wall planters available in our shop and we're obsessed! They're made out of biodegradable rice hull(don't worry, they take several years to degrade), which makes them look great but also makes them lightweight and a fantastic plastic alternative.

Wall planters work best outdoors, but you can have them indoors, too! Just make sure to have something underneath to capture water run-off.

2. hanging baskets

Think of these as the plant version of a hanging chandelier. You can suspend them

from your ceiling, roof overhang, wall hook or just about anything you can think of and just like that, you have a beautiful and elegant hanging basket! These work particularly well with trailing plants like dichondra or nasturtiums

While hanging baskets are associated with baskets made of coir(which are amazing!), there are other great options out there. You can find various solutions for hanging a regular pot, like macrame hangers or plant wall mounts, which allow you to hang a plant or attach one to a wall just about anywhere!

Hanging baskets are commonly used outdoors, but can absolutely be used indoors as well! Just make sure the plants have access to plenty of light, whether it comes in the form of sunlight or grow lights.

3. vertical garden towers

If you are interested in investing in a complete setup designed for indoor gardening, consider a vertical garden tower! You can use these for houseplants, but they're more commonly used for growing your own vegetables and herbs, coming with powerful grow lights and optimally spaced planters.

4. pallet gardens

Upcycling alert! You can repurpose an old

wooden pallet into a vertical garden by adding shelves or pockets for planting. It's a budget-friendly way to get your green thumb going! (Reduce, reuse, and grow!) This setup is best used outdoors as things can get a little messy with pallet gardens! They're a great option for small outdoor patios or balconies to fit more plants and give them more access to light by putting them higher to the sun.

5. plant shelves

And last, but certainly not least, plant shelves are a must-have for anyone serious about growing from seed! Add on some grow light strips to each level, add some heat mats, plant seeds in mini greenhouses and you have a full germination station!

Plant shelves are versatile, you can find shelves to fit just about any space, whether you choose to use  a bookcase or wall shelving. They're great for growing both seeds and plants, and are a great way to create a more controlled environment for your plant babies and store a good amount of plants in a small space. Make sure to keep humidity levels high, whether with consistent plant misting(this continuous plant mister works wonders!) or a humidifer, and maintain good airflow(use fans if you must!) to help prevent any pest infestations from breaking out.

So, whether you're a gardening guru or a newbie with a passion for plants, vertical gardening is a fun and creative way to bring nature into your space. Get growing and let your garden reach new heights - literally!
