We get it. You love your plants, and you want to give them the absolute best houseplant care possible. But as October rolls in, the best thing you can do for your mature tropical plants is actually... nothing at all. Well, at least when it comes to feeding them!
Welcome to "The October Pause." As natural daylight hours shrink and the autumn chill sets in, your indoor plants are naturally transitioning into their winter dormancy phase. Here is why hiding the fertilizer right now is a vital step in keeping your collection thriving.
Why Fertilizer in Fall Causes "Plant Burn" 🚫
During spring and summer, your houseplants use fertilizer nutrients to fuel explosive new leaves and vines. But in late autumn, their growth slows down dramatically.
If you feed a sleepy plant, those nutrients just sit in the soil. Over time, this leads to a toxic build-up of mineral salts that can dehydrate the roots, cause chemical root burn, and leave your plant with crisp, brown leaf edges.
Does this Apply To You?
But wait, you may not need to stop fertilizing your plants, it all depends on the conditions in your home.
- If it's consistently above 68F, you can keep caring for your plants as usual(fertilize 1-2 times a month) and they'll keep growing for you!
- If your home is between 62F-68F, slow down fertilizing your plants to 8-10 weeks
- If it's colder than 62F, stop fertilizing completely until it gets warmer!
Your Autumn Houseplant Checklist 🍂
For colder homes, especially if you don't supplement light with grow lights, instead of forcing growth with fertilizer, pivot your routine to these supportive tasks:
-
Slash Your Watering Schedule: Because your plants are resting and evaporation is lower, they need significantly less water. Always check the soil moisture with your finger or a water meter before pouring.
-
Wipe Down the Foliage: Accumulated dust blocks out the limited autumn sunlight. Use a damp cloth to clean your leaves so they can photosynthesize efficiently.
-
Save the Growth for Seedlings: While your big tropicals are sleeping, scratch your gardening itch by focusing on fresh indoor seed starting projects! Baby seedlings under grow lights are the one major exception—they love the consistent indoor warmth and can handle gentle care year-round.
